MANY AGE-RELATED EYE DISORDERS ARE
BEFORE BIRTH
Heredity or diseases can cause eye problems in the unborn child. In case one of the parents has a serious eye problem, or is blind, genetic counseling should be sought before the child is conceived. From conception, the fetus may suffer the consequences of the adverse visibility conditions. Two for the pregnant woman harmless diseases can have serious consequences for the child: toxoplasmosis and rubella. Incurred by the mother during the first months of pregnancy, these diseases can affect the visibility of the child. A blood test for toxoplasmosis is necessary for the immunity of the mother to verify. The non - immune women should only eat well cooked meat and should avoid the company of cats as possible transmitters of this disease. Rubella in infants can lead to cataracts. Fortunately, systematic vaccination of girls under 10 years this disease from our region banned.
THE CHILD IS BORN
Countries like ours are today an excellent medical supervision. Newborns are fully tested and problems can be detected very early.
Yet there are some points in infants who deserve your attention and parents can bring to an ophthalmologist immediately:
- White pupils or a white appearance in the eyes
- Large or abnormally small eyes
- Permanently and clearly strabismus (a mild form of strabismus is the age of six months is usually not alarming).
Children follow slightly on average from the age of 6 weeks. This may be sooner or later! Very soon the child will begin to explore his environment: do so, however, that hazardous and toxic products out of reach. Tighten the babies in the car seat securely in a custom (new regulations from 1 September 2006).
THE TODDLER
Between 2 and 5 years, several signs lead you to consult an ophthalmologist: strabismus (even though it is not constant), myopia, abnormal fatigue or headaches of a child who may indicate an eye problem. Dangerous or toxic products are more than ever, causes of accidents. Rinse in the event of an accident involving toxic products immediately and abundantly the eyes of the child.
THE CHILD FROM 6 TO 12 YEARS
At this age, latent, invisible genetic diseases reflect: this is true for pigmentosis retinitis (disease of the retina). What diabetes, which is rare in children, may cause long term eye problems. Basic precautions are certainly in this phase of application: caution in dangerous toys (scissors, arrows, material from the "small chemical"), in toxic products and travel by car (seat, seat belt) or by bike (helmet) .
THE ADOLESCENT
The adolescent may complain about recent short-sightedness (which he adapted to so far). While not threatening to vision, myopia corrected by glasses or contact lenses. Wearing a helmet is compulsory for travel with a bicycle or motorcycle, having a skull wound the ability to see can affect. See even in case of an innocent eye (battle 'by a fist, ball, tennis - or squash ball, champagne cork), an ophthalmologist, he is the only one minor injury to the retina, which - untreated - a detachment of this might cause could identify and treat.
THE ADULT
From 18 to 40 years are accidents, more than ever the causes of vision problems. Most can be avoided.
- At work (welding shops, construction work ...) is required to wear safety glasses.
- Protective goggles and a careful reading of regulations and manuals are recommended for do - it - yourself.
- The traffic is dangerous ... wear a seat belt, respect speed limits, wear a helmet when on two wheels.
- Good lighting, not too strong nor too weak, avoid eye fatigue and sunglasses to protect against sunburn.
THE ADULT OF 40 YEARS
From 40 years injures an insidious enemy, glaucoma. The disease is characterized by high internal eye pressure and evolves without one noticing. If the damage is obvious damage - a reduction of the visual field - which is often irreversible. Untreated glaucoma can lead to blindness. Hence the importance of early detection which allows an effective treatment. Another danger of this age-onset diabetes, also can cause serious eye damage (diabetic retinopathy). Since 40 years is a biennial visit to the ophthalmologist is recommended.
FROM 60 YEARS
60 years may arise from eye diseases associated with aging. An annual visit to the ophthalmologist is recommended. Cataract affects the crystalline lens that progressively opaque. Fortunately, cataract surgery problems, usually with excellent results. Age-related macular degeneration affects the macula (central part of the retina) and causes a gradual decrease in the visibility. If it greatly reduces visibility, cloudy or distorted (straight lines "seen" as curved), one should immediately consult an ophthalmologist. The earlier the detection, the better the results of treatment. Blindness is a serious handicap and can be avoided with early treatment (with laser or injections of medication into the eye)!
