MS (MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS)
WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?
MS is a disease of the central nervous system that usually manifests in young adults (20 to 40 years). Until now, the causes of MS have not yet discovered, so healing is currently impossible. Depending on the evolution of the disease, she paired with one or more of the following symptoms: sensory disturbances, speech impairment, decreased strength in the limbs and / or bladder dysfunction. In field of the eye, we note easily recurrent optic nerve inflammation, associated with worse vision, color vision disturbances and soreness in eye movements. Usually, this inflammation passes in about 1 to 3 weeks (with complete recovery of sight), thanks to medication: B vitamins and cortisone general.
As indicated above, we don't know the cause of the disease yet. What we do know is that the body will create antibodies against nerve tissue (autoimmune disease) and therefore a demyelination (= loss of insulation of nerve fibers) occurs. These hereditary factors play possibly also environmental factors (virus - measles virus?) a role! Because our own defenses reacts wrong, we can run against our defense brakes with cortisone. However cortisone gives on the long run many side effects, this product can not be used for long periods!
The diagnosis of MS is based on three criteria:
1. The existence of a progressive disorder that develops with a flare-up and recovery periods (whether or not complete).
2. Different parts of the nervous system are affected. There must be at least two attacks occurred, and there must be at least 2 lesions are present!
3. Raising antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid (determined after lumbar puncture ("spinal puncture")). This creates clear areas of demyelination in the brains (especially around small Venes) NMR scanner which can be detected.
This disease is the most common disorder of the central nervous system in young adults (50 to 100 per 100,000 people). Its course is unpredictable (10% evolves very slowly / 10% is evolving very quickly) and very different from person to person. Most people are first disturbances of the lower limbs, so sooner or later end up in a wheelchair. Only later, they are also disorders of the upper limbs. Mental functions are usually affected only very late! With all these problems is to understand the disease a major social and psychological impact. MS puts a damper on the expectations and the future of the people that face. Problems relating to marriage and family, about work, about purchasing a suitable home, mainly in young MS patients may need counseling problems. This guidance is a specialized social service mmv many motivated volunteers.
Since 1993 there has been a significant change occurred in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Two types of beta-interferon not only lead to a reduction in the number of exacerbations, but it also inhibits the progression of the disease. These products are marketed under the name of Avonex (Betaferon 1a - weekly to be injected into a muscle, the patient himself), Rebif (Betaferon 1 a - 3 X per week to be injected under the skin of the patient with special lancing) and Betaferon (Betaferon = b 2 - every 2 days under the skin to inject the patient with a special piercing tool). In addition, there are other medications available such Glatira Lake acetate (known as Copaxone) and mitoxantrone (useful in rapidly evolving MS) and Natalizumab (known as Antegren). Some of these medications are already started after the first uppercut! In addition there is the symptomatic treatment with medication and physiotherapy. Psyho-social support for patients is also very important! Since there is no definitive solution for Multiple Sclerosis and given the medications described in only 30% of exacerbations may give recovery remains scientific research aimed at the causes and treatment of disease, is fundamental.
