"hypersensitivity to dust(mite)"
  • THE CAUSE OF HOUSE DUST ALLERGY:THE DROPPINGS OF DUST MITES

  • CONSEQUENCE: RUNNING NOSE / IRRITATING EYES

  • TREATMENT: BED HYGIENE BECAUSE DUST MITES LIVE ESPECIALLY IN YOUR BED

HOUSE DUST- ALLERGY

It has long been known that contact with house dust can be a trigging factor for the occurrence of symptoms in people with asthma, nose (rhinitis) and eye load (conjunctivitis). House dust are numerous items of which the main ones are: dust mites, bacteria, fungi, insect parts, wool, feathers, animal and human dander, pollenosis and food. Especially the dust mite is still important - especially the excrement!

DUST MITES

It is estimated that in Belgium 50% of allergici are hypersensitive to dust mites. The number of asthma sufferers who react to dust mites varies between 55 and 75%. The dust mite is a spider who's barely visible to the naked eye. Dust mites grow preferably in microclimate following: approximately 75% relative humidity and a temperature between 17 and 25 °.

This explains why:

1) The dust mite is found mainly in bedrooms, more particularly in mattresses and bedding. The bed is an ideal breeding ground due to body heat and transpiration. You can count hundreds of thousands of mites per bed!

2) The dust mite occurs especially in the moist months of the spring and autumn.

DUST SANITATION

Although the exposure to house dust is unavoidable but can be minimized. You can also try to control temperature, humidity and food sources for dust mite, especially in the bedroom.

Most of its time, you can find dust mites in:

- Walls: smooth painted walls, no wallpaper, no frames and posters, cleaning walls and ceiling at least three times a year.
- Windows: close the windows tightly, smooth drapes and curtains.
- Floors: easily washable flooring (linoleum, synthetic tiles), no carpeting or felt, mopping weekly.
- Furnishings: strict limit to smooth surfaces, which are easy to wash.
- Try to avoid plush animals, washable toys is allowed.
- Bed: mattress and pillow surrounded by a dust mite-proof cover. If there's a bunk: allergic person above.
- Sheets: Blankets made of synthetic material. No feather duvet or bedspread.
- Minimize irritant fragrances : avoid strong-smelling substances (moth balls, insecticides, waxes, ammonia, etc.) / No plants or flowers / CERTAINLY NO PETS IN THE BEDROOM! Ventilate the room in the absence of the allergic person.
- Temperature: ideal in the bedroom is 16 to 18 ° C with a relative humidity less than 60%. Do not use water evaporators!
- Vacuuming: useful, but using a vacuum cleaner gets the air moving so that large amounts of dust  blazes into the atmosphere.
There must be chosen for a way to clean with dwirl minimal dust. The use of a mop and a damp wiper is recommended. A water vacuum, will also help matters!

If the allergic person suffers from dust during the cleaning, a simple mask (eg a disposable mask as used in hospitals) are established.
These are available in every pharmacy. The allergic person should not empty the vacuum cleaner itself.

ELSEWHERE IN THE HOUSE

For other living areas the same measures:
- Smooth washable floor
- Simple furnishings, which can be kept free of dust
- Remove dust with a moist cloth
- Clothing store in closed cabinets

IMPORTANT NOTES

Maintaining regular contact with pets (dog, cat, hamster ...) is not designated for allergic people, even if the investigation proves no allergy towards animals.
If you have school age children who are allergic to dust mites, one must realize that there is substance found in the school gym and classrooms.
-haired animals (guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters ...) must not stay in the classroom.
- Chalk-dust may be responsible for aggravation of respiratory allergic symptoms, it is therefore recommended to clean the board with a damp cloth.
- Do not smoke (especially in the bedroom)

For any other questions you can always contact your treating physician or physicians specializing in allergy.
