WHAT IS A CHALAZION OR TIPEYE?
A chalazion is a swelling of a sebaceous gland (glands of Meibomius) in the eyelid. These sebaceous glands are especially important for the stability of the tear film. By an obstruction of the drain current, the sebaceous ducts can not come out and accumulate in the sebaceous glands and surrounding tissue, there occurs a swelling and inflammation.
The most common symptoms include pain and redness.
How to treat?
1) Conventional
In some cases the chalazion disappears itself. A starting chalazion can be treated with warm compresses, good hygiene and antibiotic sometimes combined with an anti-inflammatory. If this does not help, the chalazion needs to be surgically removed.
2) Surgery
The eyelid is sedated and prepared for surgery.
The eyelid is flipped chalzion clamp is placed on the inside of the eye.
A vertical incision is made in the swelling.
The contents of the swelling is removed with a small spoon.
Also, the capsule of the chalazion is removed to prevent that the swelling returns.
